Alain Joseph, MSW-I

I am a black, Haitian- American man born in raised in Brooklyn, NY, who always had a love for psychology and the interpersonal relations between individuals and their network of communities, specifically interested in how individuals and their social environments mutually shape one another, as our identities, behaviors, beliefs, and emotional development. I also have a strong background and music and martial arts, which anchors me in my identity and sense of self.

I specialize in supporting young adults, ages 20–28, who are navigating the often turbulent process of figuring out who they are — whether that journey is happening because of or in spite of difficult family dynamics. While I welcome clients from all backgrounds, I have a particular focus on working with young men from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Many of the people I work with are:

● Exploring their identity while untangling the influence of family dysfunction, complicated family dynamics, or generational and cultural expectations

● Navigating the transition into independence — building a life, routine, and sense of self separate from family of origin

● Struggling with loneliness, social isolation, or difficulty forming and sustaining meaningful relationships

● Working through interpersonal relationship challenges, whether with friends, partners, or family

● Trying to make sense of who they are outside the roles or narratives they were raised in

While grounded in psychoanalysis my method incorporates elements from various therapeutic modalities, blending techniques to create a well-rounded experience designed to meet each client’s individual therapeutic goals. I strongly believe that adapting my therapeutic techniques as needed throughout the treatment process, is important.
